{"id":3196,"date":"2019-10-07T15:21:22","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T15:21:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/?p=3196"},"modified":"2019-10-07T15:21:22","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T15:21:22","slug":"child-safeguarding-statement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/?p=3196","title":{"rendered":"Child safeguarding statement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1024x191.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1024x191.png 1024w, https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-300x56.png 300w, https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-768x143.png 768w, https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j.png 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp;Child Safeguarding Statement March 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St Oliver Plunkett National School is a primary\nschool providing special primary education to pupils from Second\/Third Class to\nSixth Class<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In accordance with the requirements of the Children\nFirst Act 2015, Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and\nWelfare of Children 2017, the Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post\nPrimary Schools 2017 and Tusla Guidance on the preparation of Child\nSafeguarding Statements, the Board of Management of St Oliver Plunkett NS has\nagreed the Child Safeguarding Statement set out in this document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Board of Management has adopted and\nwill implement fully and without modification the Department\u2019s Child Protection\nProcedures for primary and post-primary Schools 2017\nas part of this overall Child Safeguarding Statement.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Designated Liaison Person (DLP) is\nthe Principal, Angela Power<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Designated Liaison Person\n(Deputy DLP) is the Deputy Principal, Alison Cooney<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Board of Management recognises that\nchild protection and welfare considerations permeate all aspects of school life\nand must be reflected in all of the school\u2019s policies, procedures, practices\nand activities. The school will adhere to the following principles of best\npractice in child protection and welfare.&nbsp;\nThe school will:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>recognise that the protection and\nwelfare of children is of paramount importance, regardless of all other\nconsiderations<ol><li>fully comply with its statutory\nobligations under the Children First Act 2015 and other relevant legislation\nrelating to the protection and welfare of children<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>fully co-operate with the relevant\nstatutory authorities in relation to child protection and welfare matters<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>adopt safe practices to minimise the\npossibility of harm or accidents happening to children and protect workers from\nthe necessity to take unnecessary risks that may leave themselves open to accusations\nof abuse or neglect<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>develop a practice of openness with parents\nand encourage parental involvement in the education of their children; and <\/li><\/ol><ol><li>fully respect confidentiality\nrequirements in dealing with child protection matters<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The school will also\nadhere to the above principles in relation to any adult pupil with a special\nvulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The following procedures\/measures are in\nplace:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In relation to any member of staff who\nis the subject of any investigation (howsoever described) in respect of any\nact, omission or circumstance in respect of a child attending the school, the\nschool adheres to the relevant procedures set out in Chapter 7 of the Child\nProtection Procedures for Primary and Post-Primary Schools 2017 and to the\nrelevant agreed disciplinary procedures for school staff which are published on\nthe DES website &nbsp;<ol><li>In relation to the selection or\nrecruitment of staff and their suitability to work with children, the school\nadheres to the statutory vetting requirements of the National Vetting Bureau\n(Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts 2012 to 2016 and to the wider duty of\ncare guidance set out in relevant Garda vetting and recruitment circulars\npublished by the DES and available on the DES website<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>In relation to the provision of information\nand, where necessary instruction and training to staff in respect of the identification\nof the occurrence of harm (as defined in the 2015 Act) the school:<ol><li>Has provided each member of staff with a\ncopy of the school\u2019s Child Safeguarding Statement <\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Requests that all staff sign a letter to\nsay that they have read the statement.<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Ensures all new staff&nbsp; are provided with a copy of the school\u2019s\nChild Safeguarding Statement and that they have signed a letter confirming\nsame.<\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Encourages staff to avail of relevant\ntraining <\/li><\/ol><ol><li>Encourages Board of Management members\nto avail of relevant training <\/li><\/ol><ol><li>The Board of Management maintains\nrecords of all staff and Board member training.<\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In relation to reporting of child\nprotection concerns to Tusla, all school personnel are required to adhere to\nthe procedures set out in the <strong>Child\nProtection Procedures for Primary and Post-Primary Schools 2017<\/strong>, including\nin the case of registered teachers, those in relation to mandated reporting under\nthe Children First Act 2015<ul><li>In this school, the Board has appointed\nthe above named DLP as the \u2018relevant person\u2019 (as defined in the Children First\nAct 2015) to be the first point of contact in respect of the school\u2019s child\nsafeguarding statement.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>All registered teachers employed by the\nschool are mandated persons under the Children First Act 2015<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>In accordance with the Children First\nAct 2015, the Board has carried out an assessment of any potential for harm to\na child while attending the school or participating in school activities. A\nwritten assessment setting out the areas of risk identified and the school\u2019s\nprocedures for managing those risks is attached as an appendix to these\nprocedures. <strong>This statement is reviewed\nby all staff at least once a year see point no. 9).<\/strong> <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The various procedures referred to in\nthis Statement can be accessed via the school\u2019s website, the DES website or\nwill be made available on request by the school<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong>&nbsp; The above is not intended as an exhaustive\nlist. Individual Boards of Management shall also include in this section such\nother procedures\/measures that are of relevance to the school in question&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This statement has been published on the\nschool\u2019s website and has been provided to all members of school personnel, the\nParents\u2019 Association (if any) and the patron.&nbsp;\nIt is readily accessible to parents and guardians on request.
