{"id":3208,"date":"2019-10-07T15:30:04","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T15:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/?p=3208"},"modified":"2019-10-07T15:30:04","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T15:30:04","slug":"recommendations-for-children-staying-in-st-oliver-plunkett-n-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/?p=3208","title":{"rendered":"Recommendations for children staying in St. Oliver Plunkett N.S."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1-1024x191.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1-1024x191.png 1024w, https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1-300x56.png 300w, https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1-768x143.png 768w, https:\/\/stoliverplunkett.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/j-1.png 2016w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \n \n \n\n \n<\/em><\/strong><strong>Recommendations\nfor the parents of children who are returning to us next year<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We\ncannot stress the importance of attendance.&nbsp;\nThe success of the programme depends on children being here every day.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\nchildren will progress well and be happier in school if all homework is done\nand if all work is signed as required by the teacher.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Every\nchild in the school is obliged to swim on Fridays.&nbsp; It is part of the school curriculum.&nbsp; If your child cannot swim for medical\nreasons, they will require a doctor\u2019s certificate stating the reasons why.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Children\nwith these difficulties get very tired because they work hard.&nbsp; They need loads of sleep, exercise and fresh\nair.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It\nis important that they realise that even though they have difficulties that\nthere are ways around them and they should not limit their future plans or\ndreams in any way.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The\nmore the children are exposed to books the better it will be for them.&nbsp; Visits to the library, bookshops and book\nfairs should be encouraged and seen as an exciting time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It\nwould be great if you can read to your child as much as possible and also good\nif they can see you reading.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Your\nchild should be encouraged to chat to you as much as possible.&nbsp; Children here will sometimes have difficulty\nunderstanding or using language.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Don\u2019t\nforget to listen to your child during these chats!<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Any\ngames that practice memory skills will be great for your child.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Go\non trips to places of interest with your child.&nbsp;\nEncourage conversation around these trips.&nbsp; Encourage recording of these outings, maybe\nthrough taking photographs and drawing pictures.&nbsp; This way your child will see that information\nis not only recorded by the written word.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If\nyour child is getting extra tuition outside the school, or over the summer,\nplease ensue that the tutor either knows the Wilson Programme or is supporting\nthe child in what they are learning here.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Encourage\nyour child to write stories just for the fun of it.&nbsp; Don\u2019t correct their stories for spelling and\ngrammar but chat to them about the characters and story only.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Enrich\nyour child\u2019s vocabulary at every available opportunity.&nbsp; Play word games, ask them to explain things\nto you, discuss current affairs and chose books with a rich vocabulary for\npaired reading.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have\nan organised, quiet area for homework.&nbsp;\nGradually reduce supervision until your child is working\nindependently.&nbsp; Remember, though, that\nthere will always be areas of homework that will require your input.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>When\ndoing homework, start with the \u201cmiddle\u201d i.e. the piece of homework that is not\ntoo easy or too difficult. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There\nare some excellent apps for children with SLD. This is constantly changing so\nit is worth keeping an eye on your app store.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Remember\nto keep up with the books that your child\u2019s peers are enjoying.&nbsp; Your child may not be able to read them but\nif you choose them to read to your child they will be able to discuss them in\nschool and will feel included.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Play\nboard games with your child and encourage discussion around what you are all\ndoing.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Start\nworking on the school your child will be going to, when they leave here, as\nsoon as possible. You will need to factor in time to have a lot of discussion\nwith the school about your child. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>We\nwon\u2019t know your child\u2019s teacher until September.
