At St Oliver Plunkett N.S., homework is designed to reinforce and consolidate learning completed in school, particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy. As a specialist reading school, we aim to ensure that homework is purposeful, manageable and supports the individual needs of our pupils.

Homework may include:

  • Reading – pupils may bring home a levelled reader, Wilson reading material, sight words/word bag and other reading activities. Regular paired reading with an adult is encouraged.
  • Phonics and Spelling – revision of sounds, words or spelling patterns that have already been taught in school.
  • Maths – activities to consolidate concepts and skills being taught in class.
  • Other activities – teachers may occasionally provide additional work linked to classroom learning.

Homework is intended primarily as revision and practice rather than the introduction of new learning. The amount and type of homework may vary according to the pupil’s class level and individual learning needs.

We encourage parents and guardians to support homework by providing a positive routine and encouraging regular reading at home.
